Dan Greear Launches Grassroots Campaign

Huntington, WV – Charleston attorney and former member of the House of Delegates, Dan Greear, has launched his grassroots campaign for Attorney General across the state in Huntington this past weekend. Greear and twenty supporters went door-to-door in the Huntington area distributing campaign literature, answering questions and hearing concerns from West Virginia voters.

Additional teams of Greear supporters will be barnstorming the state every Saturday morning, as volunteers go door-to-door in Charleston, Wheeling and every corner of the state. Greear will be going door-to-door in every major town in the state between now and the Primary election on May 13th.

Mike Ankrom of Huntington will organize his grassroots campaign. Ankrom is a veteran of numerous campaigns across West Virginia and a former employee of the Republican State Party. He also led the winning Huckabee effort during the state’s recent Republican Convention.

“The problems with the current Attorney General’s Office are apparent and I have clear solutions to these problems. I want to personally deliver that message to voters and discuss any concerns they may have.” Greear said. “We simply need to return the Attorney General’s Office to serve the function it was constitutionally intended to do; provide protection to West Virginia citizens through legal representation. I want West Virginians to know they can count on me to make these changes and I cannot think of a better way to spread the message than to tell them myself.”

Greear recognized McGraw will likely be raising a significant amount of money this election cycle, with trial lawyers funding his campaign. While the Greear campaign will raise funds, he strongly believes that grassroots is the key. “McGraw may out spend us, but he certainly won’t out work us,” said Greear.

Greear is a lifelong resident of Kanawha County, graduating from South Charleston High School in 1986 as a National Merit Scholar. He graduated from the WVU school of Law in the spring of 1992 where he also served as associate manuscript editor for the West Virginia Law Review. He served in the West Virginia House of Delegates representing Kanawha County’s 30th District in 1995 and 1996. Dan currently resides in South Charleston with his wife Amy, a social worker for Kanawha Hospice Care, and their two children, Joshua, 8 and Ben, 6.

Endorsements continue to roll in for Greear

Charleston, WV – Charleston attorney and Attorney General Candidate Dan Greear today announced additional support from legislators across the state.

Greear is very pleased and humbled to have even more elected officials support his campaign.

“Running a statewide race is very exciting; I find myself in a different part of the state every day,” said Greear. “Having support from legislators in nearly every area in the state is encouraging as a candidate. Officeholders elected by the people of West Virginia believe I am the best Republican candidate for the job,” stated Greear. “I feel honored to now have endorsements from twenty-two current and former legislators. To my knowledge at this time, my opponent has not received the endorsement of a single elected official in our state,” said Greear.

“I am pleased to announce Delegate Kelli Sobonya, Delegate Ray Canterbury, Delegate Carol Miller and Delegate Troy Andes have now pledged their endorsements,” Greear said. “I am humbled to have the support of these fantastic and energetic leaders and I look forward to working with them as our next Attorney General,” added Greear. Many legislators have already assisted by organizing fund raisers in their hometowns and participated in Greear’s grassroots effort by going door-to-door.

“Our first hurdle is to win the primary. With the support of Republicans across the state and with the backing of our elected officials, we are pleased with our progress thus far.”

Greear believes he will receive endorsements of legislators in both parties. Legislators in the state, Democrats and Republicans, have expressed anger with the current Attorney General due to McGraw’s history of allocating settlement funds. Greear, being a former legislator, believes lawmakers are ultimately responsible for the state’s budget. When programs are underfunded or cut, the citizens of West Virginia are hurt. These settlement funds should be entered in the general revenue fund and allocated by the Legislature.

The following legislators have expressed their commitment to Greear’s candidacy: House Minority Leader Del. Tim Armstead, Del. Jonathon Miller, Del. John Overington, Del. Craig Blair, Del. Daryl Cowles, Del. Bob Ashley, Del. Mitch Carmichael, Del. Bill Anderson, Del. Larry Border, Del. Allan Evans, Del Ron Walters, Del. Patrick Lane, Del. John Ellem, Del. Tom Azinger, Del. Kelli Sobonya, Del. Carol Miller and Del. Troy Andes. Greear’s Senate support includes Sen. Vic Sprouse, Sen Mike Hall, Sen. Donna Boley and Sen. Frank Deem. Former State Senators Sarah Minear, Steve Harrison and Delegate Ann Calvert are also among Greear’s supporters.

Greear is a lifelong resident of Kanawha County, graduating from South Charleston High School in 1986 as a National Merit Scholar. He graduated third in his class from the WVU school of Law in the spring of 1992 where he also served as associate manuscript editor for the West Virginia Law Review. He served in the West Virginia House of Delegates representing Kanawha County’s 30th District in 1995 and 1996. Dan currently resides in South Charleston with his wife Amy, a social worker for Kanawha Hospice Care, and their two children, Joshua, 8 and Ben, 6.

Greear says legislative effort to slow Attorney General did not go far enough

Huntington, WV – Charleston attorney and former member of the House of Delegates, Dan Greear, spoke to the Republican Women’s Club in Huntington today as he campaigns for the office of Attorney General.

Greear discussed the constant struggle the West Virginia Legislature has encountered with Attorney General Darrell McGraw. McGraw has dispersed settlement money at his own discretion rather than allowing the Legislature to appropriate the money as is their constitutional duty.

In response to the conflict with the Attorney General, H.B. 104 was passed during a recent Special Session and requires McGraw to inform the Legislature of potential monetary settlements.

Greear stated it will not prevent McGraw from employing his normal practice of distributing settlement money, but will only require him to disclose that information to the Legislature. Greear praised the Governor and Legislature for taking the first step, but said HB 104 did not go nearly far enough.

“The Attorney General should be solving legal problems, not creating them,” said Greear. “Once again, McGraw is forcing the Legislature to pass legislation to try to curb his abuses. Considering all the problems our state faces, the Legislature should not be forced to fix the messes of a constitutional officer,” said Greear.

“This bill was supported by Democrats and Republicans alike. I believe the bi-partisan support says a great deal about the dissatisfaction with McGraw, but much more must be done to reign in his abuses,” added Greear. Greear is a lifelong resident of Kanawha County, graduating from South Charleston High School in 1986 as a National Merit Scholar. He graduated from the WVU School of Law in the spring of 1992 where he also served as associate manuscript editor for the West Virginia Law Review.
